Fossulaster was named by Lambert and Thiéry (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. Its type is Fossulaster halli.

It was assigned to Arachnoididae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
