Pygurostoma was named by Cotteau and Gauthier (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 942,997].

It was assigned to Faujasiidae by Kier (1962), Kier (1966); and to Cassiduloida by Smith (1995), Sepkoski (2002).
