Taxonomy
Tithonia was named by Pomel (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Vala Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. Its type is Nucleolites convexus. It is the type genus of Tithoniidae.

It was reranked as Metaporinus (Tithonia) by Jesionek-Szymanska (1963).

It was assigned to Metaporinus by Jesionek-Szymanska (1963); to Disasteridae by Wagner and Durham (1966); to Disasteroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tithoniidae by Barras (2007), Gaillard et al. (2011).

C. G. Barras 2007Tithoniids with an endocyclic apical disc (cf. Jesionek Szymanska 1963: text-pl. 13, fig. 9). The peristome is angled to face towards the anterior. Plastron plating is amphisternous (Fig. 12B). The pore pairs are microscopic.
