Taxonomy
Portugalophis lignites was named by Caldwell et al. (2015). Its type specimen is MG-LNEG 28091, a partial skull (left maxilla), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Guimarota, which is in a Kimmeridgian lagoonal coal in the Alcobaça Formation of Portugal.
