Doragnathus woodi was named by Smithson (1980). Its type specimen is NUZ 77.5.26, a partial skull (left ramus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cowdenbeath Amphibian Bonebed, which is in a Pendleian terrestrial siltstone in the United Kingdom.
