Taxonomy
Scymnognathus parringtoni was named by Huene (1950). Its type specimen is GPIT/RE/7113, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Usili mountain, which is in a Wuchiapingian terrestrial horizon in the Usili Formation of Tanzania.
It was recombined as Aelurognathus parringtoni by Sigogneau (1970) and Sigogneau-Russell (1989); it was recombined as Sauroctonus parringtoni by Gebauer (2007) and Gebauer (2014).
