Geniculograptus was named by Mitchell (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 722].

It was assigned to Peiragraptinae by Mitchell (1987); and to Graptoloidea by Sepkoski (2002).

C. E. Mitchell 1987Aseptate, gradually widening rhabdosomes with narrow proximal end; slightly outwardly inclined amplexograptid thecae bearing a variably prominent genicular flange; primordial astogeny follows Pattern F; sicula is extensively exposed on the obverse side of the rhabdosome and bears paired antivirgellar spines in addition to the virgella. Thl1 mayor may not bear a mesial spine. Th 12 bears no spines.
