Ectinochilus (Macilentos) was named by Clark and Palmer (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-m-l]. Its type is Rimella macilenta.

It was Rimella (Macilentos) by Turner (1938); it was reranked as Macilentos by Sepkoski (2002); it was synonymized subjectively with Rimella by Squires (2013).

It was assigned to Rimella by Turner (1938); to Ectinochilus by Clark and Palmer (1923), Squires (1984), Squires (1987), Squires (1988), Squires and Demetrion (1992); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
