Taxonomy
Ophiderpeton nanum was named by Hancock and Atthey (1868). Its type specimen is Hancock Museum G25.34, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hannah Pit, Newsham, which is in a Bashkirian terrestrial coal in the Middle Coal Measures Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Oestocephalus nanum by Milner (1994).
