Sumitomoceras was named by Matsumoto (1969). Its type is Sumitomoceras faustum.
It was synonymized subjectively with Tarrantoceras by Cooper (1978); it was reranked as Tarrantoceras (Sumitomoceras) by Wright and Kennedy (1981), Wright et al. (1996), Gale et al. (2019).
It was assigned to Acanthoceratidae by Cobban (1988); to Acanthoceratinae by Kennedy and Cobban (1990); and to Tarrantoceras by Wright and Kennedy (1981), Wright et al. (1996), Gale et al. (2019).
