Ammonites sugata was named by Forbes (1846).

It was recombined as Desmoceras sugatum by Anderson (1902); it was recombined as Damesites sugata by Kennedy (1995), Cooper (2003), Shigeta and Maeda (2005), Kennedy and Klinger (2013) and Kennedy (2018).
