Besselodus was named by Aldridge (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-u O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 800]. Its type is Besselodus arcticus.
It was assigned to Strachanognathidae by Dzik (1991), Dzik (1994); to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Belodellida by Agematsu et al. (2007).
