Cahabagnathus was named by Bergström (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde-l O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 867]. Its type is Polyplacognathus sweeti. It is the type genus of Cahabagnathidae.
It was assigned to Cahabagnathidae by Stouge and Bagnoli (1999); to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polyplacognathidae by Mestre and Heredia (2020).
