Taxonomy
Hoplocephalus superbus was named by Günther (1858). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 1946.1.20.37, an other (complete male individual). It is the type species of Austrelaps.
It was recombined as Austrelaps superbus by Wallach et al. (2014).
