Taxonomy
Murex pyraster was named by Lamarck (1803). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grignon (Defrance collection), which is in a Lutetian open shallow subtidal sandstone/sandstone in France.

It was recombined as Triton pyraster by Deshayes (1835); it was recombined as Triton (Gutturnium) pyraster by Gregorio (1880); it was recombined as Triton piraster by Cossmann (1899); it was recombined as Lampusia (Gutturnium) piraster by Cossmann and Pissarro (1900); it was recombined as Tritonium (Ranularia) piraster by Cossmann (1903); it was recombined as Eutritonium (Ranularia) piraster by Cossmann and Pissarro (1913); it was recombined as Eutritonium piraster by Furon and Soyer (1947); it was recombined as Eocymatium piraster by Beu (1988).
