Sycostoma was named by Cox (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: K u T Ol Sepkoski's reference number: 614].

It was assigned to Galeodidae by Abbass (1967); to Buccinidae by Adegoke (1977); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Melongeniinae by Stilwell et al. (2004); and to Melongenidae by Vermeij and Lozouet (2012).
