Vermetus (Elliptovermetus) was named by Cossmann and Peyrot (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l; Bieler & Petit state that it is actually Late Oligocene.].

It was Dendropoma (Elliptovermetus) by Keen (1961); it was synonymized subjectively with Vermetus by Lozouet et al. (2001); it was reranked as Elliptovermetus by Sepkoski (2002), Bieler and Petit (2011).

It was assigned to Vermetus by Cossmann and Peyrot (1922); to Dendropoma by Keen (1961); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Vermetidae by Bieler and Petit (2011).
