Patella squamaeformis was named by Lamarck (1802). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Parnes, Oise (Defrance collection), which is in a Lutetian carbonate sandstone in France.
It was recombined as Pileopsis squamaeformis by Lamarck (1822), Deshayes (1824), Cossmann (1883); it was recombined as Capulus squamaeformis by Glibert (1963); it was recombined as Leptonotis squamaeformis by Bouchet and Warén (1993).
