Polyplacognathus was named by Stauffer (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 867].

It was assigned to Balognathidae by Stouge (1984); to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polyplacognathidae by Stouge and Bagnoli (1999), Mestre and Heredia (2013), Mestre and Heredia (2020).
