Taxonomy
Proconodontus was named by Miller (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres O Trem-l]. It is the type genus of Proconodontidae.

It was assigned to Proconodontidae by Sweet (1988), Pyle and Barnes (2002); and to Conodontophorida by Müller and Hinz (1991), Sepkoski (2002).
