Thyestes was named by Eichwald (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 672]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Thyestidae.

It was assigned to Cephalaspidiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Thyestiida by Sansom (2009); and to Thyestidae by van der Laan (2019).
