Taxonomy
Placosaurus rugosus was named by Gervais (1852). Its type specimen is MNHN 1906-25, a partial skull (nearly complete, fused frontal, dorsally covered with hexagonal cephalic osteoderms that are sub-equal in size, missing the right posterior corner, with left pr), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is La Debruge, which is in a Priabonian mire/swamp marl in France. It is the type species of Placosaurus.
