Helenolepis was named by Karatajute-Talimaa (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Helenolepididae.
It was assigned to Katoporididae by Soehn et al. (2001); to Thelodontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Helenolepididae by van der Laan (2019).
