Palaeomylus was named by Woodward (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-l D Fras Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. Its type is Palaeomylus frangens.

It was assigned to Ptyctodontidae by Hay (1902) and Denison (1978); and to Ptyctodontida by Woodward (1891) and Sepkoski (2002).
