Taxonomy
Macropetalichthys was named by Norwood and Owen (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-l D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Macropetalichthyidae.

It was assigned to Arthrodira by Woodward (1891); to Petalichthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macropetalichthyidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1963), Denison (1978), van der Laan (2019).
