Aspidichthys was named by Newberry (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Coccosteinae by Hay (1902); to Coccosteidae by Jordan (1963); and to Arthrodira by Denison (1978), Sepkoski (2002).
