Titanichthys was named by Newberry (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Dinichthyinae by Hay (1902); to Coccosteidae by Jordan (1963); to Titanichthyidae by Denison (1978); and to Arthrodira by Woodward (1891), Sepkoski (2002).
