Trachosteus was named by Newberry (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Dinichthyinae by Hay (1902); to Coccosteidae by Jordan (1963); to Arthrodira by Denison (1978), Sepkoski (2002); and to Mylostomatidae by van der Laan (2019).
