Palaeorhynchum colei was named by Agassiz (1842). Its type specimen is BMNH P4122 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Homorhynchus colei by Danil'chenko (1960), Danil'chenko (1980), Fierstine (2006), Monsch and Bannikov (2011).
