Pseudotetrapturus was named by Danil'chenko (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 863,915].

It was assigned to Acanthomorpha by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeorhynchidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Danil'chenko (1980), Schultz (1987), Fierstine (2006) and Monsch and Bannikov (2011).

K. A. Monsch and A. F. Bannikov 2011Lower jaw elongated, almost as long as upper; both jaws curved at tips. Dorsal fin originating above posterior border of orbit and is deeper than body. Pelvic fin with four lepidotrichia, without spine.
