Holotype designated by Dilkes (1990) who thought the specimen should be assigned to Dissorophoidea incertae sedis; specimen originally held in UCLA VP collections as UCLA-VP 3686

Taxonomy
Nanobamus macrorhinus was named by Schoch and Milner (2014). Its type specimen is UCMP 203686, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Archer City Bonebed 1 (Putnam Fm.), which is in a Wolfcampian terrestrial horizon in the Archer City Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Nanobamus.
