Taxonomy
Melanerpeton sembachense was named by Werneburg (1989). Its type specimen is FG 321/8/198, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sembachtal near Winterstein, which is in a Gzhelian terrestrial horizon in the Ilmenau Formation of Germany.
