Taxonomy
Branchiosaurus umbrosus was named by Fritsch (1879). Its type specimen is NMP 360 (Fritsch Orig 151), a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Apateon umbrosus by Schoch and Milner (2014).
