Palaeopython was named by Rochebrune (1880). Its type is Eoconstrictor fischeri.

It was assigned to Boinae by Rage (1984); and to Boidae by Carroll (1988).

Synonyms

Palaeopython sardus was named by Portis (1901). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Rage (1974); it was recombined as Python sardus by Rage (1984).
