Uromastyx was named by Merrem (1820). It is extant. It is the type genus of Uromastycinae. It was considered monophyletic by Theobold (1868).

It was assigned to Uromastycinae by Theobold (1868); and to Agamidae by Estes (1983), Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996).
