Ganorhynchus was named by Traquair (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Ganorhynchus woodwardi.
It was assigned to Dipteridae by Woodward (1891), Hay (1902); to Dipnorhynchina by Campbell and Barwick (1990); and to Dipteriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
