Griphognathus was named by Gross (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras Sepkoski's reference number: 502]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Rhynchodipteridae by Miles (1977), Campbell and Barwick (1990); to Dipteriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Holodontidae by Long (2010).
