Pillararhynchus was named by Campbell and Barwick (1990) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-l]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Pillararhynchinae.

It was assigned to Pillararhynchinae by Long (1992); to Dipteriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chirodipteridae by Campbell and Barwick (1990), van der Laan (2019).
