Polydiexodina capitanensis Dunbar & Skinner, 1931, is the genotype (type species) of Polydiexodina Dunbar & Skinner, 1931, by original designation (Dunbar and Skinner 1931: p. 263). As Dunbar and Skinner (1931: p. 267) did not originally designate a holotype, Thompson (1948: p. 55) designated the specimen figured in Plate 80, fig. 9 of Dunbar and Skinner (1937) as the lectotype (holotype of Thompson 1948) of Polydiexodina capitanensis. The lectotype is deposited in the Invertebrate Paleontology Division of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, CT, under the catalogue number YPM IP 9923A (White and Skorina 2003: p. 67). Paralectotypes for this species include specimens YPM IP 9923 B-H, J, and also the specimens catalogued under the following numbers: YPM IP 17199, YPM IP 20877 A-B, YPM IP 20878 A-B, YPM IP 20880 (White and Skorina 2003: p. 67-68).

Polydiexodina capitanensis was named by Dunbar and Skinner (1931). Its type specimen is YPM IP 9923A (lectotype), a partial shell (axial thin section of test or shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Polydiexodina.
