Taxonomy
Coccolepis was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine K Berr Sepkoski's reference number: 452,916]. Its type is Coccolepis bucklandi. It is the type genus of Coccolepidae.
It was assigned to Palaeoniscidae by Woodward (1891) and Woodward (1916); to Coccolepidae by Gardiner (1960); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Actinopterygii by Nelson et al. (2016).
