Taxonomy
Coccolepis was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine K Berr Sepkoski's reference number: 452,916]. Its type is Coccolepis bucklandi. It is the type genus of Coccolepidae.

It was assigned to Palaeoniscidae by Woodward (1891), Woodward (1916); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Actinopterygii by Nelson et al. (2016); and to Coccolepidae by Gardiner (1960), van der Laan (2019).
