Lophosteus was named by Pander (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: S u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Lophosteidae.
It was assigned to Psammosteidae by Jordan (1963); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Osteichthyes by Long (2011); to Osteichthyes by Nelson et al. (2016); and to Lophosteidae by van der Laan (2019).
