Bernicia praecursor was named by Cox (1927). Its type specimen is Geological Survey Museum, London, England, No. 38387, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Boring at the Greenwich Hospital Estate, Scremerston, which is in a Brigantian lacustrine limestone in the Scremerston Coal Formation of the United Kingdom.
