Thoracopterus was named by Bronn (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen Tr Nori]. It is the type genus of Thoracopteridae, Thoracopteroidea.
It was assigned to Pholidophoridae by Woodward (1895); to Perleidiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thoracopteridae by Tintori and Sassi (1992), Shen and Arratia (2022).
