Taxonomy
Protoscaphirhynchus was named by Wilimovsky (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Protoscaphirhynchus squamosus.

It was assigned to Scaphirhynchini by Grande and Bemis (1996); to Acipenseriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acipenseridae by Wilimovsky (1956), Estes (1969), Bryant (1989), Grande and Hilton (2006).
