Anchura (Helicaulax) popenoei was named by Elder and Saul (1996). Its type specimen is LACMIP 11342, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCLA loc. 5990, French Creek, which is in a Coniacian marine sandstone in the Redding Formation of California.
