Ohmdenia was named by Hauff (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l Sepkoski's reference number: 452]. Its type is Ohmdenia multidentata.

It was assigned to Amiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Pachycormidae by Friedman (2012); and to Asthenocorminae by Cooper et al. (2022).
