Macrosemius was named by Agassiz (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm J Tith-l Sepkoski's reference number: 452,718]. It is the type genus of Macrosemiidae.
It was assigned to Macrosemiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macrosemiidae by Woodward (1895), Hay (1902), López-Arbarello (2012).
