Aphnelepis was named by Woodward (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: J m Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Aphnelepis australis.

It was assigned to Semionotidae by Woodward (1895); to Archaeomaenidae by Gardiner (1960); and to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
