Archaeomaene was named by Woodward (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo Sepkoski's reference number: 718,915]. It is not extant. Its type is Archaeomaene tenuis. It is the type genus of Archaeomaenidae.
It was assigned to Pholidophoridae by Woodward (1895), Woodward (1895); to Archaeomaenidae by Gardiner (1960); and to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
