Ascalobos was named by Muenster (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l K Haut-u Sepkoski's reference number: 452,915]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Ascalaboidae.

It was assigned to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ascalaboidae by van der Laan (2019).
